What is trench warfare and what caused it?
- Trench warfare started after the Battle of the Marne when the British and French finally pushed the Germans back and they reached a stalemate.
- The Germans couldn't move forward, and neither could the French, so they decided to dig fortifications.
- The trenches were a series of interconnected pathways that allowed soldiers to travel from one place to another.
- The technologies of the time such as machine guns made it very difficult for soldiers to gain ground.
In what ways was Canada involved in the war?
- The four battles of Ypres, Vimy Ridge, the Somme and Passchendaele were all major events that had Canadians fighting alongside the British.
- Canadians forged an identity for themselves during WW1 and it brought Canadians from across the country together.
- Many Canadians bought Victory Bonds or contributed to the war effort through manufacturing of goods that were sent to the front lines.
