The Great Depression
On Thursday and Friday we looked into the Great Depression and the impact which it had on Canadian Society. It was a time of tumultuous changes in society and also set the stage for WWII which we will begin next week.

Key Vocabulary / Questions
Pogey
- Pogey was a type of social welfare which people could get. Unfortunately to get it you had to wait for hours in a lineup and publicly declare yourself ruined. There was a lot of shame associated with pogey and even then, it wasn't enough to survive.
- It was somewhere between 15-50 for a family with 3 children for the whole month.
- Indigenous people only received about $5.00.
- The New Deals were public works projects that were supposed to inject money into the economy.
- Part of the plan was to send single men to work for about a quarter ($0.25) a day in remote places building ditches and roads.
- Not everyone was on-board with the ideas, but the government's attempts to inject money into the economy helped.

Stock Exchange Simulation - We completed the WS on Page 6, considering ways we could have avoided the stock market crisis.
Gatsby Paragraph
Write a paragraph about the Great Gatsby.
- What are some similarities and differences between the 20's and now?
- How do you think the author might be critiquing society of the time?
- Do you think things have improved since then? Why or why not?
When you are writing about the movie/book, please try to refer to specific examples from the movie or book.
Example: "I felt that the 1920's was more shallow than these days."
Better Example: "I felt the 1920's was more shallow than modern day society because of the lack of care which people showed each other in the movie. For example.... "
