Black Hand


The Black Hand were the extremist group was involved in the killing of Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand's death was the spark that began World War 1

How did the Great War Begin?


  • Many countries were connected to alliances that would help each other in the case of war. 
  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by the Black Hand causing a chain reaction. 
  • Germany supported Austria-Hungary while Russia backs Serbia
  • France joins with Russia and Great Britain joins in later. 

Who was involved? 

  • The Triple Alliance included Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy before the war, but Italy decided to join the other side when the war began. 
  • The Triple Entente was France, Britain, and Russia.
  • Other countries also joined in to truly make it a World War. For example, the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey), joined with Germany while USA eventually joined with Britain. 
  • The colonies also sent many people from countries around the world.
