Word of the Day Suffrage Suffrage is the right to vote in political elections. This is important because women sought the right to vote and WW1 in some ways helped to give women a voice. Essential Questions See textbook pages 45-54 What place did women and minorities have in the war? Women had an increasingly important role in the labour market. They worked in munitions factories as well as in different sectors of society. Prime Minister Borden used suffrage to guarantee winning the election. At this time many women supported supporting those fighting on the front while there was also increasing resistance to issues such as conscription. Women did not fight in the front-lines, but many helped in other ways by travelling as nurses and supporting in other ways. Trench warfare started after the Battle of the Marne when the British and French finally pushed the Germans back and they reached a stalemate.
