4. Know some possible causes of WWII
5. Be able to explain about Canada's isolationism and anti-semitism
7. Know about the end of the war and how the war ended both in Europe and in the Pacific.
8. Know about the Holocaust and its impact.
Essential Questions
1. What were the totalitarian regimes in Europe and the World before WWII?
- Spain (Franco)
- Italy (Mussolini)
- Germany ( Hitler)
- Russia ( Stalin)
- Japan
2. What were some of the causes of WWII?
- Hitler's Imperialistic Ambitions
- Appeasing Hitler
- Nazi-Soviet non-aggression
- Failure of the UN (in Manchuria, Abyssinia and beyond)
3. What was Canada's response to the climate of Anti-semitism at the time?
- Canada had an isolationist approach at a time and saw what was happening in Europe as a domestic issue.
- Mackenzie King went to Germany and even thought Hitler was a good speaker.
- At the same time there was growing anti-semitism in Canada. Canada even rejected the SS. St. Louis which was a boat of Jewish refugees escaping Germany.
4. How did Canada join the war?
- Rather than joining automatically, this time Canada put the question to the government.
5. How can looking at objects from the past teach us about the time where they come from?
- By looking at objects from the past, we can learn about what was important and the society of the time.
6. What are some of the main arenas of war which Canada joined, Sea, Air and Land?
- Hong Kong
- Raid at Dieppe
- The Italian Campaign
- D-Day and Europe (Juno Beach)
- The Netherlands
- The Battle of the Atlantic (Sea)
- The War for Britain (Air)
- Bombing campaigns over Germany (Air)
- Both D-Day and the Italian Campaigns were strategies to get back into Europe.
8. What new technologies were developed in WWII?
- Some Examples are:
- The Enigma Machine
- V2 Rockets
- Radar
- Penicilin
- M&M's
- Any appropriate answer will be acceptable.
9. How must have Japanese Canadians felt during Japanese Internment in Canada?
- Answers vary, but they must have been very angry and upset.
- They lost all of their property and were regarded as enemies even though they hadn't done anything wrong.
10. How did the war end?
- Hitler committed suicide May 07 1945 and the day after, May 08 1945, Germany Surrendered. It was called VE Day.
- A few months later on August 14th 1945 after the dropping of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war was won in Europe.
11. What was the holocaust and why was it important?
- Answers vary, but the holocaust was important because it shows the horrible direction societies can go if left unchecked. It teaches us about not only the horrors of war, but also the danger of having a totalitarian regime take over, especially if the policies of that regime are destructive to the people.
The Master Race
- The Germans saw the Master Race as a pure race. They persecuted any ethnic or minority group outside of this image. Jewish people were a focus of the negativity, but they were not the only group persecuted.
Anti-semitism
- discrimination towards Jewish people.
- Many countries including Canada were anti-semitic in their immigration practices of the time.
Artifact
- An object made by human beings from an earlier time.
Operation Barbarossa
- It means "red beard"
- A massive attack on the Soviet Union after the French were defeated.
The enigma machine
- The Enigma Machine was invented by the Germans and could send encrypted messages that were very hard to break.
- Alan Turing helped to break the code
The final solution
- The Nazi plan to systematically kill all European Jewish People.
You have all worked so hard this semester.
